Advice to creators

To anyone sitting on a great story idea who feels held back by a lack of budget, equipment, connections, or formal industry experience, my biggest piece of advice is simple: start with what you have, and let the technology empower you.

Creator Spotlight

SinthSeries

Ten questions, answered in their own words.

  1. 01

Please briefly introduce yourself and your creative team. Who are you, where are you based, and how did you begin your journey into filmmaking and storytelling?

I am Robert Haynes, a film and television producer, director, and video editor based in Johannesburg, South Africa, operating through my production company, 42nd Street Films. With over three decades of experience in the industry—working primarily as an executive producer by trade—my creative journey has evolved from traditional post-production into pioneering cutting-edge digital storytelling, vertical mobile dramas, and AI-assisted visual and musical workflows.

  2. 02

What inspired you to create micro-dramas? Was there a particular moment, story, platform, or opportunity that made you think, "I want to do this"?

What really drew me into the world of micro-dramas was the sheer immediacy and narrative freedom of the format. After spending over thirty years working in traditional film and television—primarily as an editor—I found myself completely fascinated by the rise of vertical mobile storytelling and short-form streaming platforms.

There wasn't just a single lightbulb moment, but rather a realization of how hungry modern audiences are for high-octane, emotionally charged storytelling that fits right in the palm of their hand. Watching how platforms like ReelShort and MyDrama were completely shifting the paradigm made me realize that micro-dramas weren't just a passing trend; they were an entirely new cinematic frontier.

As a filmmaker and editor, I saw an incredible opportunity to take traditional narrative structures—rich character arcs, high-stakes drama, and cinematic world-building—and compress them into punchy, highly engaging vertical episodes. It forced me to rethink pacing and visual composition entirely. Being able to combine that fast-paced format with cutting-edge visual and musical workflows allowed us to bring ambitious projects like Rejected Moon to life with a level of creative control and speed that traditional pipelines simply couldn't touch. It’s an exhilarating space to create in because every single second has to earn the viewer's absolute attention.

  3. 03

Please introduce the series you created. What is the story about? What makes it special to you, and how do you hope audiences will feel while watching it?

Rejected Moon is set against a brutal, snow-covered wilderness, Rejected Moon follows Ilara, an Omega within the Silver Creek pack who faces devastating exile when she is cast out by Alpha Kai. What begins as a cruel decree transforms into a fight for survival when Ilara touches an ancient glowing moon stone, awakening a dormant power belonging to a lost bloodline the pack desperately tried to erase. As faction lines fracture and a bloody war erupts across the snowy pine forests, Ilara evolves from a hunted outcast into a powerful force determined to reclaim her throne, make her oppressors beg for their lives, and shatter the pack's tyranny once and for all.

It's fresh, it's fantasy and it looks expensive. I'm hoping it will appeal to audiences who enjoy the Twilight films.

What does your production process look like? Could you take us behind the scenes, from the initial concept to the finished production, and explain how you complete each step?

Here is a behind-the-scenes look at your production process, blending your three decades of industry experience as an editor with modern AI-driven workflows at 42nd Street Films:

Behind the Scenes: From Concept to Finished Production 1. Ideation & Concept Development: Every project starts with high-concept storytelling tailored for mobile and digital streaming platforms—such as vertical dramas (Rejected Moon, Velvet Nights), thematic series (The Space Race), or genre shorts. This stage involves defining the core arc, emotional hooks, and structured episode breakdowns.

    2. Scriptwriting & Storyboarding: Writing punchy, fast-paced scripts designed to hook audiences instantly. For serialized dramas, this includes establishing character dynamics, sharp dialogue, and dramatic cliffhangers that keep viewers swiping or clicking to the next episode.

    3. AI Visual Generation & Prompt Engineering: Leveraging advanced AI visual platforms (such as Mage.space, Google Veo, Hailuo, Grok Imagine, Vertix, and Dreamina) to engineer custom camera motions, atmospheric lighting, and striking cinematic shots. This allows for rapid prototyping and world-building that matches traditional pre-visualization on an accelerated timeline.

    4. Custom Score & Audio Composition: Crafting original musical backdrops, thematic motifs, and vocal tracks using structured prompts in tools like Suno AI. This ensures every scene—whether a tense standoff or an emotional climax—has a tailor-made, professional-grade soundtrack.

    5. Traditional Editing & Post-Production: Bringing over thirty years of editing expertise to the forefront using Adobe Premiere Pro. Footage, AI-generated assets, voiceovers, and Suno AI tracks are meticulously assembled, color-graded, re-scored, and polished with visual effects to deliver a seamless, high-end cinematic finish ready for platforms like Odysee, Facebook, and streaming distributors.

  5. 05

As independent creators, what has been the most difficult part? What have you learned that could help others avoid similar challenges?

I think the biggest challenge is always finding the RIGHT distribution portal

  6. 06

What makes a micro-drama successful in your view? When each episode is so short, what keeps audiences watching and makes them eager to see the next episode?

In my view, what makes a micro-drama successful comes down to mastering emotional momentum and relentless pacing. When every episode is bite-sized, you don't have the luxury of slow burns or meandering exposition. To keep audiences hooked and eager for the next installment, a few critical elements have to work in harmony:

Instant Emotional Hooks: You have to grab the viewer within the very first few seconds. Whether it's a shocking betrayal, an intense confrontation, or an overwhelming emotional peak, there's no room to warm up—the story has to hit the ground running.

Relentless Cliffhangers: Every single episode needs to end on a razor's edge. The transition from one episode to the next has to feel urgent, forcing the audience to immediately tap, swipe, or click to find out what happens next rather than letting their attention drift.

High-Stakes, Condensed Conflict: Micro-dramas thrive on heightened emotional stakes—betrayal, forbidden romance, intense power struggles, or survival against impossible odds. Because the runtime is short, the emotional core has to be massive and crystal clear so the audience instantly invests in the characters' fates.

Pace and Rhythm: Marrying tight editing with a driving musical score is vital. When the visual pacing and custom soundtrack amplify the tension beat-for-beat, it creates an immersive, cinematic rush that keeps viewers completely glued to their screens from start to finish.

What would you say to people who have great story ideas but feel unable to produce them because they lack budget, equipment, connections, or experience? What advice would you give them to help take the first step?

To anyone sitting on a great story idea who feels held back by a lack of budget, equipment, connections, or formal industry experience, my biggest piece of advice is simple: start with what you have, and let the technology empower you.

For decades, filmmaking was an exclusive club gated by massive budgets, heavy cameras, studio gatekeepers, and expensive post-production pipelines. Today, we are living through the greatest democratization of storytelling in history. You don't need a million-dollar crew or an elite studio backing to bring a world to life anymore.

  8. 08

After completing your series, what challenges did you encounter when bringing it to audiences? How important are distribution and audience reach for independent creators?

I'm still looking for distribution as we speak.

  9. 10

What are your plans for the future? What are you currently working on, and what would you like to create next? Where can people follow and support your work?

I have another 25 vertical drama series in production
