Advice to creators

MT Productionz Zambia

Ten questions, answered in their own words.

  1. 01

Please briefly introduce yourself and your creative team. Who are you, where are you based, and how did you begin your journey into filmmaking and storytelling?

We are MT Productionz Zambia Ltd, a Zambian media production company based in Lusaka. Since 2008, we have worked across film and television production, documentaries, advertising and visual storytelling.

Our journey has been driven by a passion for telling meaningful stories and using the power of film to connect people. We have developed our production experience through working on diverse projects and understanding how to turn ideas into compelling visual content.

Today, we are taking that experience into original digital series and vertical micro-dramas. We want to tell stories that reflect African life while reaching audiences around the world. THE LOBOLA represents an important step in that journey.

  2. 02

What inspired you to create micro-dramas? Was there a particular moment, story, platform, or opportunity that made you think, "I want to do this"?

We believe micro-dramas create an exciting opportunity for African storytellers to reach audiences in new ways. People are increasingly consuming entertainment on their phones, and short episodes allow powerful stories to fit into everyday life.

We were inspired by the possibility of combining the emotional depth of traditional television drama with the pace, accessibility and addictive storytelling of mobile-first entertainment.

For us, this is also an opportunity to take Zambian stories beyond our borders. We want to demonstrate that African creators can develop original intellectual property that entertains, builds loyal audiences and creates sustainable opportunities through digital distribution.

  3. 03

Please introduce the series you created. What is the story about? What makes it special to you, and how do you hope audiences will feel while watching it?

THE LOBOLA (BRIDE PRICE) is a 60-episode romantic family micro-drama set in contemporary Lusaka, Zambia.

Alex is a talented young artist who falls deeply in love with Mwangala, the daughter of wealthy businessman Mr Nawa. Their love is genuine, but Mwangala's father believes Alex is not wealthy or powerful enough to marry his daughter. He sets an impossible lobola demand, hoping to force Alex out of her life.

The decision sets off a chain of heartbreak, separation, difficult choices and unexpected consequences. As the characters' lives change, the story explores whether love can survive pride, social class and the damage caused by family expectations.

What makes THE LOBOLA special is its distinctly Zambian perspective on a universal conflict: choosing between the person you love and the expectations of the people around you.

We want viewers to feel romance, frustration, hope, heartbreak and suspense. Each episode is designed to leave audiences wanting to know what happens next, while introducing international viewers to the richness of contemporary Zambian life and culture.

  4. 04

What does your production process look like? Could you take us behind the scenes, from the initial concept to the finished production, and explain how you complete each step?

Our production process begins with a strong concept and a clear understanding of the audience. We develop the premise, characters, story arcs and episode structure before moving into scripts and visual planning.

For THE LOBOLA, we have developed a production bible, character profiles, storylines and cinematic visual references to maintain consistency across the series.

We then plan the locations, wardrobe, performances, camera language and episode pacing. Our approach combines established production knowledge with AI-assisted creative workflows where appropriate, while keeping character continuity, emotional authenticity and storytelling quality at the centre.

Post-production focuses on editing, dialogue clarity, sound, subtitles, vertical framing and quality control. We design each episode to deliver a meaningful dramatic moment and a compelling reason to continue watching.

  5. 05

As independent creators, what has been the most difficult part? What have you learned that could help others avoid similar challenges?

One of the biggest challenges for independent African creators is turning a strong story into a production that can compete for attention in an increasingly crowded entertainment market. Budgets, access to distribution, international visibility and the cost of maintaining production quality can all be challenging.

We have learned that a good idea needs more than enthusiasm. It requires planning, disciplined storytelling, resourcefulness and a clear understanding of the audience.

With THE LOBOLA, we are approaching these challenges by developing the series systematically, building reusable production assets and exploring digital-first production methods. We believe independent creators can overcome many obstacles by starting with a focused vision, protecting their intellectual property and building strategically towards the right distribution partnerships.

  6. 06

What makes a micro-drama successful in your view? When each episode is so short, what keeps audiences watching and makes them eager to see the next episode?

A successful micro-drama must make the audience care about its characters almost immediately. Every scene needs a purpose, every episode needs an emotional payoff, and the ending should create a genuine reason to watch the next instalment.

We focus on relatable conflicts, strong character motivations, secrets, difficult choices, emotional reversals and suspenseful cliffhangers. In THE LOBOLA, the central conflict is simple to understand but rich enough to sustain a longer story: can love survive when wealth, family pride and social expectations stand in its way?

We also believe visual quality, authentic performances, clear dialogue and consistent storytelling matter, even when episodes are short. The goal is not simply to make shorter television, but to create a viewing experience specifically designed for mobile audiences.

  7. 07

What would you say to people who have great story ideas but feel unable to produce them because they lack budget, equipment, connections, or experience? What advice would you give them to help take the first step?

Start with the story you genuinely want to tell. You do not need to begin with a huge budget, expensive equipment or international connections, but you do need preparation, persistence and a willingness to learn.

Develop your concept, understand your audience, write compelling characters and plan your production carefully. Use the resources available to you intelligently, build a team around complementary skills and create a sample that demonstrates what makes your story special.

Most importantly, think about distribution and ownership from the beginning. Understand your rights, document your agreements and identify platforms and partners that fit your project.

African creators have stories the world has not heard yet. We should not wait for perfect conditions before developing them. We should build professionally, keep improving and pursue opportunities with confidence.

  8. 08

After completing your series, what challenges did you encounter when bringing it to audiences? How important are distribution and audience reach for independent creators?

For independent creators, completing a series is only part of the journey. Finding the right audience and distribution partner can be just as challenging as production itself.

African stories have enormous potential, but creators need access to platforms that can help their work travel beyond local audiences. We are exploring digital distribution, creator platforms, social media promotion and partnerships that can introduce THE LOBOLA to viewers in Africa and internationally.

We see audience development as an ongoing process that includes trailers, character-led promotional content, consistent releases and engagement with viewers.

For us, the right distribution partnership would provide more than visibility. It would create a pathway for our original stories to reach audiences, build a following and generate sustainable revenue while preserving the long-term value of our intellectual property.
