Do not let external limitations such as budget, equipment, or industry connections discourage you. The creative environment today is very different from what it was in the past, and many tools can significantly lower the barriers to production. The most valuable thing is still the unique story idea in your own mind.

LumaWave (沐星远澜) is an emerging creative team based in Yunnan, China. Our members come from different parts of the country and bring experience from a wide range of professional fields, including game concept art, animation, television screenwriting, variety-show editing, film art direction, and architectural design.

In the past, each of us focused on our respective areas of expertise, while continuing to share a passion for visual storytelling. As AI-powered filmmaking tools rapidly evolved, we saw new creative possibilities emerging, which brought a group of like-minded creators together. We hope to move beyond the conventional boundaries of traditional filmmaking by combining our diverse professional skills with new technologies to create high-quality visual stories of our own and pursue our shared vision for filmmaking.

On one hand, we saw that micro-dramas had already developed a large audience. Their concise and fast-paced storytelling format allows an exciting creative idea to reach viewers quickly. On the other hand, the maturity of AI-generation technology has lowered many of the hardware and production barriers that previously existed in filmmaking.

There was also a very direct catalyst. Many of our team members had accumulated a wide range of interesting story ideas, but it was difficult to bring them to life within traditional long-form film and television projects. Micro-dramas offer a flexible format and greater freedom in pacing, making it possible to quickly turn those ideas, emotions, and stories into finished works. Once we realized that new technologies could enable a small team to complete the entire process—from story development to final production—we became determined to pursue micro-drama production.

Our series follows Elena, a mother who has lost her daughter. With the power of a blood moon, she returns to the age of eighteen and assumes the identity of Lily, embarking on a journey of revenge. Determined to seek justice for her daughter, she relies on her intelligence and ability to maintain a perfect disguise as she navigates a dangerous relationship between her enemy, Julian, and Julian’s older brother, Alexander.

For our entire team, this project holds special significance. It is the first collective work delivered by our newly formed, cross-industry team. Every shot and every section of the script reflects the perspectives and expertise of members from different professional backgrounds. It represents our first opportunity to transform the ideas in our minds from concepts on paper into a visual story.

We hope audiences can become fully immersed in the story and experience its emotional highs and lows alongside the characters. Beyond the enjoyment of an engaging viewing experience, we also hope the series leaves viewers with something to think about and relate to. Even within a limited runtime, we hope the story stays with the audience.

Our workflow can be broadly divided into five stages: story development, script and storyboard development, visual production, editing, and final refinement.

The first stage is brainstorming and concept development. The team collaborates on the core premise, characters, and story outline, while establishing the narrative pace and key selling points of the micro-drama.

The second stage is script development. We break down each episode into plot points, dialogue, and hooks, adapting them to the short-form narrative structure of micro-dramas and developing the corresponding storyboard concepts.

The third stage is visual production. Drawing on our team’s expertise in art and animation, we combine it with AI-powered filmmaking tools to create visual assets, settings, and characters.

The fourth stage is post-production. We create an initial rough cut, adjust the shot sequence, and add voice-over, sound effects, and background music to build a complete first version of the production.

The final stage is refinement. We review the entire project, adjust the story pacing, visual quality, and audio details, and strengthen the suspense hooks at the end of each episode before delivering the final version.

As a small independent team, our biggest challenges fall into two areas. First, our resources are limited and our team is relatively small, so one person often has to take on several roles. Some of our members are also recent graduates who are still learning and developing their skills, which means the entire team operates under significant time and workload constraints.

The second challenge is balancing creative vision with audience expectations. We want to express the core ideas behind our stories while also adapting them to the narrative rhythm of micro-dramas and maintaining a balance between artistic expression and the audience’s viewing experience. Finding that balance can be difficult.

Our key takeaways are as follows: First, plan ahead. Avoid developing too many storylines at once. Focus on one core story and develop it thoroughly rather than trying to cover too much. Second, evaluate the work from the audience’s perspective as early as possible. After completing the script, simulate the viewing experience instead of becoming so immersed in self-expression that you lose sight of pacing. Third, independent teams do not need to perfect every detail. Prioritize the story’s core elements and key shots, allocate resources accordingly, accept reasonable compromises where necessary, complete the project first, and continue refining it over time.

  6. 06

In our view, the foundation of a successful micro-drama is always a good story. It needs more than attention-grabbing conflict; the characters must also feel convincing and give audiences a reason to empathize with them, rather than relying on twists simply for the sake of twists.

When the runtime is short, pacing is the first priority. The story should introduce the conflict quickly rather than spending too much time on setup. Each episode should also end with an effective suspense point or emotional hook that creates curiosity about what happens next. At the same time, the characters’ actions need to remain logically consistent, and plot twists should serve the story rather than exist solely to create surprise. Even in a very short format, audiences should care about the characters’ fate. When viewers become invested in the characters, they naturally want to click on the next episode.

Do not let external limitations such as budget, equipment, or industry connections discourage you. The creative environment today is very different from what it was in the past, and many tools can significantly lower the barriers to production. The most valuable thing is still the unique story idea in your own mind.

Here are several practical suggestions. First, start writing. Put your story and characters down on paper in a simple form; there is no need to worry about professional screenplay formatting at the beginning. The priority is to turn the idea into words. Second, manage your initial expectations. Do not try to achieve top-tier image quality or assemble a large production team from the start. Use the resources you already have to complete a first sample. Completion is more important than perfection. Third, watch works in the same genre, analyze their narrative pacing, and review what works and what does not so that you can build experience through practice. Fourth, look for like-minded collaborators. You do not need a large team; a small group with complementary skills can be enough to launch a project. If you have an idea, take action rather than leaving it indefinitely at the concept stage.

  8. 08

Completing a production does not mean the creative process is over. One of the biggest challenges we faced was finding a way to ensure that the right audiences could discover our work. As a small independent team without large-scale promotional resources, identifying the right audience and delivering the series to viewers who would genuinely enjoy the story can be a major challenge. We also need to manage practical matters such as version adaptation, compliance, and different formatting requirements across platforms.

Distribution and audience reach are extremely important for independent creators. Even a strong story can struggle to create value if there is no effective channel to bring it in front of viewers. Completing the work is only half of the process. Finding the right audience and receiving viewer feedback—whether positive or constructive—can help us improve future projects and also give independent creators the motivation to continue creating.

Overall, our experience working with HeyRuby has been very positive. For a small independent team like ours, it is difficult to build a complete distribution and revenue system independently. HeyRuby respects creators and recognizes the value of independent work. Its clear and transparent royalty structure has helped address some of the distribution and revenue challenges that are particularly difficult for small teams.

The platform also gives creators a high degree of creative freedom. It does not excessively interfere with the story itself, allowing us to retain space for creative expression, while also providing corresponding distribution and promotional support. This is particularly valuable for an independent team with limited resources. It allows us to devote more time and energy to content creation instead of spending substantial effort navigating complicated distribution processes, while giving us the opportunity to bring our stories to a wider international audience. This has been especially meaningful to our team.

At this stage, we are refining new series and continuing to improve our content. At the same time, the team is preparing new micro-drama projects. We will continue to build on our multidisciplinary strengths, explore storytelling across a broader range of genres, and discover new creative possibilities through AI-powered filmmaking.
